Grand Prix Go Walkthrough
When you first look at Grand Prix Go is seems like a pretty basic driving game but there's actually quite a lot to it. From regular races to qualifying races, you need to be at the top of your game with this one and that's really what makes this game so interesting. The graphics are decent - far from the worst you'll get with an online driving game but far from the best as well. In this one, the focus isn't on flashy graphics and a lot of cheap grabs for your attention. Instead, the focus is exactly where it belongs, on providing a challenging and engrossing driving game that's heavy on the driving. You need to have decent driving game skills if you want to do well in this one but fear not - newcomers to the genre can excel as well. It'll just take a little practice but that is perhaps the biggest benefit of this game - practice is a whole lot of fun.
The premise behind Grand Prix Go isn't terribly unique in the world of online driving games. You have a car and you need to get that car around the track as fast as you can. If you want to move on to the next track, you must finish in the top three. Where you finish in the race in terms of rank will also determine how much prize money you earn for the race. That money is important. You'll use it to buy upgrades to help your car perform to the best of its abilities. Finishing high in the ranks will reward you with more prize money but you'll still earn money for finishing lower. Don't be afraid to replay a race several times to build up money to buy upgrades. Those upgrades are important and will help you excel in this often tricky game. If you completely upgrade your car, win all of the races and qualify on the poll at the end, you'll unlock the pro series. That's obviously appealing, especially for more experienced players so it's something you're definitely going to want to try for.
You have three options when you start a new race in Grand Prix Go - race, qualify and practice. Both race and qualify will pit you against other drivers and will give you a goal. You want to rank as high as possible in both. In race mode, you'll earn prize money regardless of where you place. That isn't the case with qualify. If you're trying to accumulate money for upgrades, racing is the way to go but consider taking a spin or two in practice mode first. Practice mode allows you to familiarize yourself with the track. You can get used to where the twists and turns are. While you have a mini map to help you out during races, nothing beats actual experience racing the track. A few trips around the track in practice mode can help you perform better in the races. The one serious drawback to practice mode is the lack of other cars on the track. During actual races, the other cars you're racing against can be a serious hindrance to your performance. Make sure you're aware of that. You also don't get money for practice but the experience you'll gain will be well worth it.
The actual upgrades in Grand Prix Go are pretty standard for online racing games. You have engine upgrades, boost upgrades, brake upgrades, downforce upgrades and grip upgrades. Engine upgrades improve your acceleration and your top speed, allowing you to move around the track much more quickly. Boost upgrades increase your boost which in itself upgrades your engine power but only for short periods of time. The important thing to remember with both of these upgrades is that increased speed can make it harder to keep your car under control. Make sure you're ready for that. Buying other upgrades in combination with the engine and boost upgrades can definitely help with that. Downforce upgrades helps improve cornering making it an ideal upgrade to go along with engine boosts as it helps you gain a little more control around corners. It's always a good idea to back off on the speed a bit when you're heading around a sharp turn but downforce upgrades allow you to keep a higher rate of speed (even if not full speed) as you take corners so you won't lose as much ground on turns. Traction upgrades are also a great idea to buy with engine upgrades because they improve your traction which will also give you more control.
Most of the information you need to gauge how well you're doing in Grand Prix Go is shown right on the game screen. This is pretty common in the world of online driving games so experienced players should have a pretty good idea of how to use this information. You have the lap you are on at any given time displayed toward the center of the top of the screen along with how many total laps there are. If you're behind in the race, this gives you an idea of how long you have to catch up. If you're ahead, this gives you an idea of how long you need to maintain your lead in order to win. At the right of the screen, you have your time information. The time at the top shows you the current time for your lap. Below that, you'll see your best lap time for the track and finally, you have the record lap time for the track. You want to try to beat the record lap time. If you succeed, you'll be rewarded with an achievement.
One of the biggest tools you have at your disposal in Grand Prix Go is the replay of your best time. Watch that replay to see how you handled the track and really watch for mistakes. Learn from what you did wrong and do what you can to correct the problem to get a better lap time and possibly even beat the record for the track. Beating the track record is far from easy but it's well worth the effort. In the qualifying rounds, it's also important to watch the times shown at the top left corner of the game screen. Many of the other driving games online don't have qualifying races so for many players, they're going to be a bit tricky to get the hang of. The truth is, they're actually pretty easy to understand. You need to get a decent qualifying time if you want a good race grid slot. You have three laps in total to set your qualifying time to focus on getting a decent time. If you manage to get a qualifying time that's in the top three, you'll earn extra prize money. This is really for the more experienced driving game players looking for something a little extra. Newcomers to the genre will want to focus on qualifying. Wait to focus on getting in the top three until you've built up a little more experience with the game.
Overall, Grand Prix Go is the kind of driving game fans of the genre are going to love. It's difficult but not so difficult newcomers won't be able to enjoy it. It's a great beginner driving game because it really gives you the chance to get used to what it takes to keep your car under control and those are skills you can then use in some of the more difficult driving games online. There is a lot here for more experienced players as well though. The fact that you can unlock the pro series and the advanced races that come along with it will definitely make the game far more appealing for skilled players. If you're a fan of driving games, racing games or just fun free online games, you need to put Grand Prix Go on your must-play list.
